As for myself, apart from numerous prizes at various international violin competitions I am a solo violinist with the great experience of teaching the violin. I have been teaching at The N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov Saint Petersburg State Conservatory and the Rimsky-Korsakov College of Music for six years. I teach playing the violin, as well as orchestra studies for violinists and violin teaching methods. Most often I teach violinists, but I have also had the experience of teaching violists.
Some of my students have already won prizes at international violin competitions. As for myself, apart from numerous prizes at various international competitions, I have received one pedagogical award: the 2nd prize at the all-Russian competition for teachers of music “Modern art and education” (Moscow, 2010).
I also give private lessons, including Internet lessons.
I offer three options of Internet lessons:

Video lessons

You record yourself playing one piece (or one part of a sonata or a concert) and send me the video together with the scan of the sheet music for this piece. You can make the recording even using the laptop camera. I watch your recording attentively and send you the response video, where I play some fragments of your piece myself. I show and explain to you, what your weak points are. Depending on your level of training, we will be working on your hand position, vibrato, stroke technique, transition from one position to another, style, sound quality, etc. Besides, I will send you the analysis of your performance in the written form in English, German or Russian and give recommendations concerning your further studies.

    1. Video lessons are the fastest, the most modern and the most efficient approach to study violin via Internet.
    2. The quality of the video is much better than that during skype video session; sound distortions are inconspicuous. I will have a chance to hear you very well, just like at a “live” lesson, and will be able to work on the slightest nuances of your sound. I will have a very good chance to assess the quality of your sound and your vibrato, your intonation, your interpretation and the quality of your bow attack. We will work on vibrato, concert presentation and various stroke techniques. We will also search for the appropriate sound and the appropriate style for each particular piece.
    3. In the video I will be able to see the faults of your hand position and to understand, whether the velocity distribution of the bow or your choice of the finger notation is wrong. I will then give you pieces of advice on how to improve these things.
    4. I will play fragments of your piece myself and send you those recordings. What can be better than having a concert violinist play your program for you? I will share my experience with you; you will be able to watch my videos as many times as you need and either copy my technique and interpretation, or continue searching for your personal manner.
    5. My written recommendations will enable you to organize your own studies in between our lessons in the most efficient way.
    6. You can send me your video materials whenever it is most convenient for you.
    7. You can record the video when you know the piece very well and are in your best shape. Thus, you will demonstrate your best performance and get the required professional advice on how to improve something that you already are satisfied with. If you have played the piece of music not in the best possible way, you will not have to waste your time and money on useless pieces of advice as you can always make a different recording and make sure that you send me the video of your best performance.
    8. You can also send me your video even if you have not learned the piece very well yet. Some students need step-by-step instructions, starting from the time when they begin working on a piece. This is OK as well; such approach motivates students to learn a piece in the right way from the very beginning.
    9. You do not spend time on traveling to your teacher; nor do you waste your time in traffic jams. You get your lesson without leaving your house. Unlike for skype lessons, we do not even need to set the exact time of the lesson. Spend the time that you save on your studies!
    10. No matter where you are, in Vladivostok, Johannesburg, Sydney or Lima, you do not have to worry about not being able to find good violin teachers in your native city. If you have a violin and a computer with the Internet connection, go ahead!
    11. Video lessons are cheaper than “live” lessons. At the same time, they are just as efficient, and maybe even a little more efficient.
    12. You can watch the recording of your video lesson as many times as you need.
    13. I enjoy working and can do without summer or winter vacations, so our working process will not be interrupted.
    14. Video lesson is a perfect option, if your command of English, German or Russian is not strong enough. You can simply translate my written recommendations on-line. You will be able to understand my response video, where I will play the violin myself, even without words (although I will say a couple of words as well)!
    15. Such comprehensive approach will allow you to achieve the best results as soon as possible.
    1. You do not gain the experience of “live” performance in front of a teacher. If you need such experience, I recommend that you combine video lessons with my “live” lessons or my skype lessons, where we will communicate in the real time.

Whom are my video lessons suitable for?

My video lessons are designed for violinists that have at least basic knowledge about holding the violin and the bow and at least some experience of playing this instrument. But I consider this option to be particularly valuable for students that are preparing for international competitions or orchestra auditions. Video lessons are also a perfect option for students of higher musical educational institutions or students of music schools that would like to consult a good musician, but do not know how to do it. Now consulting a professional at any stage of work becomes extremely easy! You do not even need to leave your house.
Video lessons are not suitable for beginner violinists that have not had any experience of playing the violin. To get a video lesson, contact me and transfer the money via PayPal. If you do not have PayPal, we can discuss other options of payment. Please, provide the following information in your letter: your name and age, how long and how intensively you have been playing the violin, where you have studied, what most difficult pieces you have already played, what pieces you are working on at the moment, what you would like me to help you improve and what you plan to achieve in your career of a violinist.
You should then send me your video and scanned sheet music. If you have not learned the piece very well yet, that’s OK. You can play from music. I will help you!

Skype lessons

I often use skype lessons with my students in St. Petersburg when I am on tour. A skype lesson is organized just like a “live” lesson. You play one or several pieces (I recommend to focus on one piece per lesson). I am listening to you playing in the real time, stop you at certain points, share my thoughts about your performance and your hand position and ask you to play the piece again bearing in mind my corrections. During skype lessons I mainly focus on your technique and concert performance.

    1. A skype lesson is as much similar to a “live” lesson as possible. Skype lessons are the best option for those of you, who would like to have a “live” lesson, but live too far away. I correct your mistakes in your presence. You can ask me a question whenever you feel like it; you can ask me to explain why you should do this or that. We can talk about strong and weak points of your performance, about the ways to interpret the piece of music that you play, about organizing your personal studies, about different ways to work on a particular stroke and about many other things.
    2. We work in the real time. You will play for me and feel like you are having some serious performance. Perhaps, you will even be a little anxious. This is a perfect thing to do before some important audition, exam or competition!
    3. During skype lessons I will have a chance to hear you very well. I will have a good chance to assess the your intonation, your interpretation and the quality of your bow attack. We will work on various stroke techniques and concert presentation. We will also search for the appropriate style for each particular piece.
    4. During the skype lesson I will be able to see the faults of your hand position and to understand, whether the velocity distribution of the bow or your choice of the finger notation is wrong. I will then give you pieces of advice on how to improve these things.
    5. You do not spend time on traveling to your teacher; nor do you waste your time in traffic jams. You get your lesson without leaving your house. Spend the time that you save on your studies!
    6. No matter where you live – in some distant Chinese province, in New Zealand, in remote areas of Russia or in the Caribbean – the distance is not an obstacle; getting a lesson from a professional musician is now as easy as ever!
    7. Skype lessons are cheaper than “live” lessons. At the same time, they are just as efficient.
    8. I enjoy working and can do without summer or winter vacations, so our working process will not be interrupted.
    9. You can record our skype lesson and then watch it as many times as you need.
    10. Such comprehensive approach will allow you to achieve the best results as soon as possible.
    1. The quality of skype connection is not always good enough. You can hear and see absolutely everything, but some sound distortions are inevitable. It is usually difficult to work on vibrato and colors of the sound via skype, as the sound becomes flatter. For instance, it is difficult to tell the difference between the “warm” violin sound and the “sweet” violin sound via skype. If you need to work on your sound and vibrato a lot, I recommend that you combine skype lessons with my video lessons.
    2. I do not use my own violin during skype lessons. This option is available in case you choose my video lessons.
    3. Skype lessons are not suitable for violinists that do not speak English, German or Russian. In case you do not know any of these three languages, you are welcome to choose my video lessons!
    4. We will need to set the exact time for the skype lesson. If this is not convenient for you, you are welcome to choose my video lessons.

Whom are my skype lessons suitable for?

My skype lessons are suitable for violinists of all levels, from beginners to soloists. I suggest advanced violinists to choose skype lessons, as they provide them with a great opportunity to practice before an important concert and to put the finishing touches on the piece.

“Live” lessons

Without any doubt, a live lesson with a concert violinist is the best option. I give live lessons in Berlin and Saint Petersburg (I visit both cities almost every month), as well as in Salzburg, Moscow and Lipetsk (I visit these cities not so often). I always bring my own violin to the lesson and demonstrate different ways of playing the same piece, as well as the best strokes and finger notation. As a rule, having seen me play students feel very energetic; they realize, that one piece can be interpreted in a number of different ways, and this is something that motivates them for further training. Live lessons have almost all advantages of video and skype lessons. Many students that take private lessons with a different teacher prefer not to make it public in their educational institutions; this is especially true about Russian students. I can guarantee complete anonymity for those who need it.
However, live lessons have their drawbacks as well. Most importantly, such lessons are not available for those, who live too far away. There are other drawbacks as well: you need to spend time on traveling and traffic jams, it’s harder to record this lesson and watch it later (if you want to do it, you need to bring a camera or a dictation machine with you); the time and the duration of the lesson depend on my concert schedule and schedule of my recordings, the lessons are also more expensive – the cost depends on your level of training. This is something that can be discussed individually.
